Melanie Wilson and Fuel are applying to the BBC Performing Arts Fund to host a Fellow in 2015. The Fellowship scheme aims to support individuals through the early stages of their performing arts career, helping them to establish themselves in the professional world through bespoke placements within existing organisations.
Melanie Wilson and Fuel are developing a new science fiction feminist opera called Opera for the Unknown Woman. It will be a large scale, multi-media operatic work that fuses strands of contemporary electronic composition, sound art and orchestral elements, together with voice. The piece interweaves operatic and choral modes of singing together with more visceral vocal expression, and explores spoken voice in relation to the sung. Co-composed by Melanie Wilson and Katarina Glowicka and directed by Melanie Wilson, it is planned to premiere in late 2015.
This unique opportunity will offer a female conductor the chance to work on a high quality creative project, a piece of new music that will push the boundaries of what opera can be. The conductor will assist the Musical Director and will be offered mentoring support from professionals and will collaborate with Melanie, Katarina and the Musical Director to deliver the musical direction of the piece. The fellow will work on the final research and development phase of the project in spring 2015, through the rehearsal process in autumn and into the final performances in late 2015.
Melanie and Fuel want to play a small part in opening up opportunities for female conductors who are currently woefully under-represented in the industry.
