Fuel - the story so far

Fuel was founded in 2004 by Louise Blackwell, Kate McGrath and Sarah Quelch. It is a producing organisation that supports the work of some of the most exciting new theatre artists in the UK. Fuel artists make quality theatre whether for adults or young people.

Fuel works in partnership with national and international venues, funders and investors in order to most effectively support the development of new theatre. BAC (Battersea Arts Centre), London and the Jerwood Charity are two of Fuel’s partners. In all of Fuel's work, we are committed to exploring and developing the broadest potential for involvement and interaction with our artists and their work.

Fuel is currently producing work with The Clod Ensemble, Fevered Sleep, David Harradine, The Lyric Hammersmith, Mark Murphy, NIE, Peter Reder, Sound&Fury, Uninvited Guests and Will Adamsdale. We also work with a range of other artists on projects. We work in partnership with these artists to maximise their potential.

Fuel - the mission

Fuel is a producing organisation, working in partnership with artists to develop, create and present new work for all ages; particularly in the field of live performance. Creativity, strategy and interaction are at the heart of Fuel.

Creativity Central to Fuel’s creative producing is imaginative and inspiring dialogue with artists. Working in partnership, Fuel will instigate and develop ideas, helping them to flourish; foster collaborations; identify opportunities for training and development and guide the creative process. Fuel embraces the wildly inventive, cultivates craziness and dares artists to dream.

Strategy Planning for the future is key to our vision. As well as delivering short-term goals, we focus on long term strategic planning. The progression of Fuel and the artists we work with relies on deft management, prudent business planning, ambitious fundraising and sustainable development.

Interaction Fuel aims for the audiences interacting with our work to experience something honest, inventive, surprising and moving. This interaction can comprise of seeing, discussing and participating. We see our interaction with artists, creatively and strategically, as a partnership: shared risk, shared gain.

By coupling creative theatre thinkers with the most creative theatre makers, we will be able to deliver new and breathtaking theatre to the widest possible audiences both nationally and internationally.

Fuel - the producers

Louise Blackwell

From 2001 - 2004 Louise was a Producer at BAC. She was responsible for discovering the next generation of artists of vision. She programmed and produced the Scratch Programme, OctoberFest and many of BAC's main seasons. During this time she worked closely with many artists in a producing role.

Before BAC, Louise was a Producer at Brighton Theatre Events working with Paul Hodson. She produced various small and middle scale projects including: the stage adaptation of Nick Hornby's Fever Pitch and John King's The Football Factory as well as the play to celebrate the centenary of Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club; Brighton 'Til I Die!

Kate McGrath

Kate was a Producer at BAC for three and a half years. She worked on projects, festivals, seasons, and co-productions (including Kneehigh’s The Wooden Frock and Richard Thomas’s Kombat Opera Klubneit). Freelance projects Kate has produced include: Cue Deadly: A Live Film Project, winner of the Oxford Samuel Beckett Theatre Trust Award (Riverside Studios) and Brazil by Ronan O’Donnell (Latchmere Theatre, London; Arches, Glasgow). Kate is a director of Floodtide. She was awarded a Stage One Producer's Bursary in 2005.

Kate was dramaturg for the Perrier Award Winner 2004, Jackson’s Way, with Will Adamsdale, Names of the Dead (BAC) and Filter’s Faster (BAC, national tour, British Council showcase). She directed Dead Man's Biggest Fan (Melanie Wilson & Catherine Dyson), and the Fringe First Award-winning production of HyperLynx (Citizens, Glasgow; Pleasance, Edinburgh; Tricycle, London). She was assistant director for Théâtre Parminou in Quebec (2000) and a journalist for BLVD Europe in Paris (2001). In 2000-2002 Kate worked as an Arts and Features Writer for The Scotsman.

Sarah Quelch

As a producer at BAC, Sarah has been responsible for programming and delivering education work for those aged 3+ years. Under her supervision, BAC's Young People's Theatre has been named by an ACE initiative as one of the 8 best youth theatres in the UK, and she was employed as an advisor to develop awareness of good practice to other organisations.

Sarah has pioneered 'scratching' work for young people, specifically encouraging companies who usually make work for adults to do so for children. Previous projects she has produced and toured nationally include The Spaceman for 6+ years (Blind Summit) and Feast Your Eyes for 4 - 7 year olds (Fevered Sleep). Sarah was also worked with Frantic Assembly to create the education package for the middle scale national tour of Peepshow (2002).
